The Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountains of Southern Wyoming are a winter paradise offering access to many places for snowmobiling, skiing, sledding, snowboarding and snowshoeing amidst breath-taking mountain scenery.
Snowmobile Trails
The exceptional snow conditions in the Snowy Range and the Sierra Madre Mountains offer 245 miles of well groomed trails and 180 miles of ungroomed trails, plus many miles of excellent backcountry access.
Trail maps, which include parking and avalanche areas, and regulations can be obtained from local government agencies and retailers. The Wyoming Trails website also includes information about highway conditions, fees, permit selling agents and trail grooming reports. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures, wind and/or moisture can result in cold-related injury from frostbite and hypothermia. Enjoy winter sports longer and prevent injury by frequently checking weather conditions and wind chill temperatures, dressing properly and following the Snowmobile Safety Tips (left). Local sporting goods stores are available to outfit you properly.

Skiing and Snowshoeing Trails
Whether novice or expert, the groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails of the Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountain Range are suitable for all levels of ability. They provide winter recreation with panoramic views of Wyoming and Colorado mountain ranges. Cross-country ski rentals are available in Encampment at The Trading Post.
The Libby Creek Trail and Barber Lake Trail are the most difficult cross-country ski trails in the Snowy Range. Both traverse steep terrain and are accessible from the Green Rock Trailhead, nine miles west of Centennial. The Little Laramie and Corner Mountain Trails, just west of Centennial, offer short loops that are great for beginners. The Brush Creek Trails (located on the west side of the Snowy Range) and Bottle Creek Trails (in the Sierra Madre Range) are good for novice and intermediate skiers. The Chimney Park Trails, south of Woods Landing on Highway 230, offer longer, more challenging loops. Parking fees are required at the Green Rock, the Little Laramie, Corner Mountain and Chimney Park Trailheads.
Pole Mountain, east of Laramie, is easily accessed from Interstate 80. Its vast network of challenging cross-country ski trails are also used by hikers and mountain bikers in the summer. The Snowy Range Ski Area is located 5 miles west of Centennial. Four chairlifts, 27 ski trails, a snowboard park, a rental shop and lodge complete with café and lounge attract all levels of skiers– plus several nordic ski trails that wind around the base of the ski area. Skiing and snowboard lessons are available.
